Parent Resources

We would like to share great resources for parents, families, and staff.  If you have something you would like to share, please let us know!

Making the past come to life: For many kids, learning about history is a school-only activity.  However, kids who experience history outside of the classroom, like in museums and on actual historical sites, enjoy it much more.  But why should the enjoyment stop at historical sites?  Why not their favorite websites?  Click here and here for some cool history sites for kids!

Combating Childhood Obesity: Childhood obesity has risen to nearly epidemic proportions. Did you know that 18% of children around the nation are now obese?  That's triple what it was thirty years ago.  Though the numbers seem to indicate that it is spiraling out of control, there are things you can do to keep your kids from becoming a statistic.  Click the title or the picture for more information on what you can do to set your kids up with healthy eating and exercise habits!

DCCombati The Great Outdoors: Playing outside is not only fun for kids, but it has a multitude of other benefits as well!  Check out the top six reasons why the Great Outdoors is great for your child's health and development (click the picture or title for the full article!)

Kids and sports:
Kids who play sports are less likely to do drugs, have better socials skills, and are better prepared for all facets of school and life (click picture for full article!)

Talking With Your Children:  Parents who engage their young children in conversational give-and-take help their offspring gain a significant leg up in terms of language acquisition, new Dutch research reveals.

Board games help reinforce lessons learned in the classroom:  Disconnect the Xbox, uninstall the computer game software and close the laptop. You want your child to have fun but learn at the same time, at a fraction of the cost? Play a board game, experts say.  Click on the picture or title for the full article.

10 Questions to Ask Your Child About His or Her Day at School:  The trick is to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended to help your child to describe his world. It's also great to start the conversation with an anecdote from your own day. Click the picture or title for the full article.

Get Your Family Lauging:  Laugh. Giggle. Squeal. Howl. You want your home to be a place of laughter and levity. But how do you infuse more laughter into your family--especially when everyone is so busy?  Click the picture or title for the full article.
